A terrorist attack wipes out much of America's government, and a dictator seizes the presidency. Under the influence of extremist religious groups, the dictator allows foreign forces to occupy the West Coast as leverage for the trillions of dollars the US owes their country. Large civilian and military segments of America rise against the dictator and his allies, sparking a bloody civil war. Driven by their painful personal losses, Army Ranger Jude Winthrop and Military Police Officer Kate Hartmann team up to kidnap the dictator’s wife and exchange her for prisoners of war. As they grapple with their emotions, their Appalachian Command partnership turns them into the scourge of America’s enemies.

He tells the story well, including the tragedies and atrocities that are a part of it. He brings attention to the emotions of those who participate and gets close to their priorities. He has spent much time studying the technology of war and the mindset of warriors. I enjoyed the read very much, and I will buy the other two books of the series, Thanks Dan.!
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2013 Verified Purchase Insurrection: Appalachian Command is a frightening apocalyptic read about America's nightmare come true--the destruction of our governmental infrastructure and the take-over by Al Qaeda terrorists. It reminded me a bit of the movie "Red Dawn" but it's better, and Dan Santos has the military and government service background that enables him to write this story. A gripping read that I finished in two sittings. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the state of our world today and the threats facing America. A must-read!

Reviewed in the United States on February 20, 2022Verified PurchaseThis book/author was introduced to me by my author-friend Mike Slavin. This book is strikingly worrisome. Meaning it is a very worrisome presentation of a possible future. While several of my liberal friends feel (and remind me) that the biggest threat in the present US is right-wing domestic terrorists, my answer is that Al Qaeda (or another flavor of jihadist extremists, such as Hizballah, Islamic Jihad, ISIS, Boko Haram, etc.) makes me much more anxious. And Dan Santos has brought my nightmares to life in his apocalyptic novel describing the total destruction of our governmental infrastructure, and the take-over by Al Qaeda terrorists along with the invasion of the US west Coast by the Chinese. The protagonist of the book, Jude Winthrop is a former Army ranger turned diplomat, and the author’s personal life experience both in the military and diplomatic arenas makes the book very “realistic” in its details. The story moves very fast. I just bought the 2nd and 3rd books in the triology
Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2014 Verified Purchase I find it even more fascinating to read a story when I am familiar with the names and locations. I can see a strong element of truth running throughout the story. I would like to think this could not really happen, but....
